(My first Burning Man event)
We raced up a path that took us to the edge of the mountain, overlooking the party, baring witness to the last effort of the sun sinking like a sorbet candy... and all below us, all 600 revelers howled at the sunset in unison. We stood and joined them victoriously. The music slowed surrealistically to a temporary pause after the sun officially set and then the DJ released his wild lions, heard for miles around and everyone rejoiced in endless time. We ran down the mountain as dusk descended and the pyramids glowed brighter. I found myself in a pimped-out van with red muppet fur lining the ceiling, floor and walls. There were benches and pillows and everyone greeted everyone as they entered the two perpetually open doors, arriving in as strangers and leaving as friends. By weekends' end, almost all of the crowd had met each other at one stage or another. Such a life-celebrating community and instant the way life should be. No prejudices, no assumptions, just open minds and free-flowing acceptance. I didn't dare stay in one spot too long. There was too much to explore. I spun under stars laughing and sunk into deep gazes with new friends. Nothing held back, just pure direct acknowledgment, nothing withheld, no fear. And now, with a taste of this new community that Jason introduced me to, I know now that they are out there… Not hidden in cubicles, feeling jaded, going through the motions of responsibilities but out in the desert dancing to their own beats and raising their extended arms to the sky, feeling life fully. I want to play....
