Coachella 2004
holly and i burned thru the night, driving the desert snake, arriving around midnight to coachella and set up our tent among thousands of others on the festival grounds. among the strings of guitars and voices all around in the dark, i pumped up the air mattress. we met great people on line that had us laughing as we dragged our gear to the front of the line
everyone converged, united in music and community. at 4am a jam session reached a peak with acoustic renditions of bauhaus and bowie songs. i smiled as i cuddled into a dream, sleeping soundly for a few hours and awaking to a stretching purring holly, sunshine on my face and my purple boa hung above us. we dressed in the tent, brushed our teeth and had peanut butter and apples for breakfast in the shade. we waited an hour to get into the festival. we did cartwheels in a polo field and suffered the heat… collapsing in a shady flowery area for a while, resting upon entering. recharged and curious we explored the grounds, art sculptures and film tents, many stages with many bands. the vortex where the music met was the closest definition of chaos i fathomed recently.
we went to the sahara tent to see erase erratta, an all-girl punk band. we strategized how we could do it too. her on guitar and vox and me on drums… we bounced eating falafel and the heat forced us out of the tent and into wandering. lemon ices is the monkey on our backs constantly and we go to great lengths to satiate it.
1am – writing by candle light inside the tent. shadows of happy people pass all around us as holly passed out next to me clutching a purple glow stick. she barely got off her mary-janes. the pixies live were amazing!!! so was radiohead! coachella is a chaotic labyrinth and the curiousity of art and music held us suspended. we walked continents today in search of that vibe. we found it in the form of ‘debaser’ playing live before us and glowed our happiness.
someone now plays guitar. it’s been days since we’ve experienced running water. we are dusty happy revelers and the desert is our playground. we get to do it all again tomorrow too! ending tomorrow night with the cure headlining!
the morning began with red bull and driving from indio with the colors of dawn around us. we both stare contently ahead of us, smiling. my belly hurts from laughing with her for two hours straight in the tent before passing out for an hour and then assembling our gear.
yesterday morning we went on a trip before going into the festival for the 2nd day. we went to obscure landmarks like the date store / museum where a movie is advertised about the sex life of dates. we sat and giggled in the back of an empty dark room while the film played, reminiscent of fifth grade science films. we saw half of a dead rattlesnake in the desert sand while we were taking roadside photos. we drove in search of the beginnings of mountains and occupied the hottest hours of the day by a waterfall outside in a plaza, letting the spray cool our backs.
